Having a Hard Time Trying to Conceive? The Infertility Causes in Men

When a couple is struggling to get conceived, many times the women who is blamed. It shouldn’t be that way. If after a year a couple have no success in their attempts trying to conceive, they should see a doctor. There are a number of causes of male infertility to consider. About one third of the time the problem lies within the man, one third in woman, and the other third in both. If a couple seriously want to get conceived, they should go for an examination to find out what might be the underlying fertility problems.

In general people tend to think that only the woman needs to watch her health since she will be the one with the baby inside her. That’s not true. Health problems may also lead to infertility in men. If a man smokes, the habit may affect his sperm count. He has to stop smoking. Excessive alcohol use can also affect sperm count, as can drug use. A man may want to talk to his doctor about any prescription medications that he is taking. He should watch carefully on his diet. A diet rich in zinc helps increase sperm count, so he may want to eat a lot of shellfish and eggs.

Besides lifestyle health factors, which can be controlled, one of the most common causes of male infertility is a condition known as varicocele. Quite simply, it’s a varicose vein in the man’s scrotum. The vein is large and can generate heat in the testicles. This affects the sperm. Varicocele is usually a treatable condition, but surgery is required.

If there is any doubt about the causes of male infertility, a visit to doctor is necessary. He will be able to determine the best course of action. The first thing the doctor will want to do is to perform a semen analysis. it’s a straightforward test, especially when compared with the tests that women have to undergo. The test is easy and not going to hurt at all; instructions will be given by the doctor. Often two samples are taken, a month apart, so that the samples can be compared with each other. If there is a problem with the sperm (quantity or quality), the doctor will instruct what to do next. Otherwise he’ll decide upon the best plan of action, or recommend possible treatments for infertility.
