When it comes to coaching high school soccer, we must accept the fact that self-control is a choice just like confidence that players must make. In soccer coaching, it’s the relation between emotions and thoughts that concludes the self control strategies. We all know that our state of mind influences our emotions, which in turn strengthens our performance.
You can aid your players in learning the skill and discipline of self-control with the 12 step strategy that I’m going to share with you. Still, it is better that players take up these steps only when they feel that it is going to be of value to them.
What’s more, the players should also be prepared to take full responsibility for the actions they take. The strategy has been given below in 12 steps for your reference.
1. Awareness: In coaching youth soccer, lend a helping hand to players in identifying their weak points. Have them analyze where, when, and how they lost control on field during the past.
2. Understanding: Allow the players to make out the reason that affected their thinking in such a way that they lost their emotional stability.
3. Differences: Let them recall various situations when they managed to maintain control and when he did lose control. And then they should determine the difference in their emotions, attitudes, and behavior.
4. Problem: When it comes to coaching high school soccer, try to point out the real problem. For example: Is it the guilt of letting the whole team down because of their performance?
5. Belief: The players should be taught to raise their expectations for themselves with self-control as one of the traits. Encourage them to change.
6. Reinforcement: Behavior change is accelerated by reinforcement. To make the improved skills of players as their permanent skills, you, being a coach, must reward them.
7. Goals: To guide the players through skill upgradation process, set a series of small goals for them. Help the players understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions.
8. Techniques: Set up multiple performance based methods to boost the confidence level. For example: Course of action must be clear in the minds of players when a certain situation arises.
9. Plan: In football coaching, teach the players to pursue their goals in a planned and systematic way.
10. Progress: Tell them to be patient. Help the players realize the value of ups and downs in the path to improvement.
11. Setbacks: Train the players to accept that setbacks are bound to happen from time to time. So, the better is to use these to learn new ways to tackle these.
12. Remembrance: Last but an important point is to let the players identify the good reason behind the change. The players must always know that why and what are they doing. What would the change mean to them for their future?
For a soccer player to achieve a perfect performance state, the player must be trained for relaxed swiftness. It means possessing energy without tension.
This is of utmost importance. To teach the players in channelizing their energy in way that they are able to produce emotions to help them get rid of tension, include relaxation techniques in coaching high school soccer.
