Upper body workouts for a 16 year old?

I am 16 years old and want to build my upper body strength, I have a power tower and a 12lb med ball, thats about it. Any suggestions to build my chest and arms? Also how should I build up my strength to do pullups?

admin answers:

How developed are you for a 16 year old? Like I mean, when I was 16, I was still quite undeveloped, compared to some of the other guys. If you are still very kid-ish in your physique (sort of lanky, or whatever) then I would say you should take it easier, and wait a few years before you start really working out hard.

If you just want to be a little fitter (ie ability to do push ups and chins up etc) then you should do this sort of routine, which is what I did (and my brother, who was trying to train up for the army requirements).

3 sets of 12 push ups. If you can’t do 12, do as many as you can, and then rest, and do the same amount again. If you can do more than 12, go til about 3/4 of the way to your maximum.

3 sets of 30 crunches. Actually what I would recommend here is you check out some of the youtube core exercise routines. There’s one in particular that really makes my muscles burn, I think it’s called 8 min ab workout or something like that. I know you said upper body strength, but core is important too.

Now you said you can’t do pull ups, so here is an alternative which helps train you. Start in the completed pull up position (ie. Chin above the bar) and then lower yourself as slowly as possible down til your arms are straight. Also, try hanging in one spot, ie half way between straight arms and chin above the bar. Do those as much as you can throughout the day, after a couple of weeks of doing that every day, you should start to be able to do pull ups.

On top of this, if you want the appearance of being built, you need to do some more weights, like curls, bench press, etc etc. Since you don’t have much equipment I’ll give you a demonstration of what I used to do. As a uni student, I had tons of textbooks, I used to pack as many of them into a small bag as I could, and use that as a weight, then do some typical exercises (once again, research to find which ones suit you). I also did push ups, and crunches, and pull ups as often as possible. Now I didn’t become a rig, by no means, it just got me to a point where I was happier with how fit I was.

I know this is a massive answer, sorry about that, just trying to give you as much info as I can. Good luck!

I drink a protein shake in morning and for lunch i eat a protien bar. i do a thoasand crunches a day i cant get this fat off my waist.

admin answers:

Taking diet pills generally dont do much of anything. And when you stop taking them they usually cause you to put the weight right back on.
The main way to lose weight is to run..alot. Run a mile or 2 a day. Even running in place (since you have 2 kids) inside your house and just making sure you pick your knees up high as if you were running can help you just the same as running outside. As long as your heart rate is going up then its doing the job.

Sit ups are better for your stomach muscles that crunches are. If you do “rockys” those are also very good for your stomach. You keep your shoulders off the ground as if your doing a crunch and then you bring your right elbow to left knee, left elbow to right knee…and so on. That or you can also do scissor kicks….keeping your shoulders off the ground and then kicking on foot in the air (slowly) and then switching without letting your feet touch the ground.

I did all these work outs plus..like..12 other things a few summers ago and lost 35 pounds in less than 2 months and i lost almost ALL the extra baggage i had on my tummy. And i dont lose weight very easily! Look up military workouts or “getting in shape for basic training”..something like that. I got my workout routine from my brother before he left for Iraq..and its all the stuff he did at basic! Good luck—it should work! Keep up eating good though. Instead of eating so little..try eating a little bit more but just good carbs. Eating so little can actually stahl the process of losing weight!
Good luck!!!

unemployment benefits for wa?

my brother is currently in wa unemployment, but last week he got a job, but the training is in OR, is it possible for him to collect WA state unemployment while training in OR?

Do each state communicate with each other with regards to unemployment benefits? i know unemployment benefits come from federal taxes.

he claims since the unemployment benefits is coming from WA and he is in OR for training its possible for him to collect. since the states dont communicate. i say the otherwise, who is correct.

admin answers:

If he fails to notify WA that he has income form a job he risks repayment of the excess payments at the very least. On top of that, he can be barred from future unemployment compensation claims for as long as the State cares to bar them, even for life.

In the worst case scenario he can be prosecuted for unemployment fraud by WA and if he should file the claim from OR the Feds could get involved with mail fraud and/or wire fraud charges. While the odds of Federal involvement might be low, why tempt fate in becoming a Poster Child for a Federal felony rap?

States DO communicate information on unemployment claims, especially neighboring states. His chances of being caught are virtually 100% by the way. His employer will be notifying WA State of the money he is being paid as part of their routine payroll tax process. Once the State sees the overlap in income and unemployment benefit payments, he WILL be busted. That much is a CERTAINTY.

Mark asks…

If i’m 14 now and can do 5 over grip pull ups,10 push ups,how many in 2 years?

I can also do 60 sit ups in 2 minutes, so if i do them 4 times a week in 2 years time how many pull ups, press ups and sit ups will I be able to do in 2 minutes, push ups are shoulder width and the the pull ups are shoulder widths with the chin over the bar

admin answers:

I started being about to do about 10-15 pushups, and in less than a year got to nearly 250 consecutive. Same with sit-ups I started about 60-70 and got to well over 300–(I don’t even think I tested myself properly as I probably could have pushed out 750-1000 if I cba). Pullups I never trained properly but as you get older, heavier it gets harder… I started at about 10, I’m at 25 without proper training. Basically this is all in less than a year get a proper routine and your going to fly by brother! Do: pushups: 8 (onemin) 5 (onemin) 4 (onemin) 4 (onemin) 12 (try bro!) sit-ups: 50 (fivemin) 50 (5min) 25. Try this every day excluding Wednesday and sunday and for pullups just max out every day, eachweek trying to push out 3 more than usual. If you give it your 110% you should be getting 200-350 pushups, nearly 1000 sit-ups and 50 pull ups by two years. ITS POSSIBLE BRO! People say don’t give yourself impossible goals, fuck them anythings possible. 🙂
