Your Questions About Essay Question Instructions

Ken asks…

How should I write this religion essay? I don’t know how to start?

Below are the essay instructions. Please help.

In this paper you will contrast the “Islamic” values contained in the five pillars with the “Islamic”values contained in Shi’a and Sufi sources. In doing so, you will answer the following question: Are the values in the five pillars, Shi’te Islam, and Sufi Islam the same, different, or the same in some
ways and different in others?

In answering this question, please follow the below instructions:
First, choose two of these four Islamic values: love, submission, remembrance, and suffering. Then, using specific examples from your readings, discuss how some of the various paradigms of
authority that we have encountered in the Islamic tradition (i.e. recitation, lineage, exemplar, or teacher-student relationships) shape and facilitate the way that Shi’a and Sufi beliefs and practices integrate your two chosen major Islamic values. So, for example, you could discuss how teacher-student relationships in Sufi dhikr/zikr and the concept of exemplar in Shi’a matam both facilitate the integration of remembrance and submission.

Finally, discuss how your two chosen Islamic values conflict with and/or are shared by the five pillars of Islam. So, to continue with the above example, in this part of the paper you might discuss whether or not the values of remembrance and submission can be seen in the five pillars of Islam.

Starting with “Once upon a time” should set the tone.

Thomas asks…

Not sure what my essay topic instruction mean?

(Basically there’s 6 stories we’ve read and I gotta choose 1 to write this essay on)

Instruction: Referring to and quoting the primary text at least 6 times, discuss why one of the stories below is an effective short story. In other words, what in your opinion makes the story work?

What does it mean “makes the story work”? Am I supposed to write how the story I read has descriptions and storyline that fits perfectly in a timely manner?

admin answers:

Making the story work just means makes it a good story. Maybe its a mystery and to make that work, You have to build a gap in understanding (the mystery) then uncover or reveal things that make the story plausible or believable. For most Mysteries, you either should be a ble to figure it out, or have an “ahhh” moment at the end when that final piece of information completes the puzzle.

Betty asks…

For the Common App supplements, can your essays go over the character limit?

For example, Stanford has 3 supplement essays. The instructions say “at least 250 words but not exceeding the space provided.” The box for typing says “1800 characters remaining” when empty, but that is only around 300 words. Can we go over the character limit without “exceeding the space provided”?

admin answers:

I didn’t apply to Stanford, but last year Northwestern’s supplement did not allow you to go over the character limit. If it gives you a tally, then it probably will not let you past the limit.

Laura asks…

How would u start an essay that “Explains the significance of the swine Flu and it’s power to be a panademic”?

I have to do an essay with those instructions. How would you start it and what are some vital information you might add?

admin answers:

I would start off by defining the swine flu and what a pandemic is. There is a difference between a pandemic, epidemic, and an endemic.

Make sure you talk about the causes and effects of the swine flu. How did it originate? How could it become more widespread and what would happen if it does?

Hope this helps good luck!
