Helen asks…

why was the worlds columbian exposition important?

i have this project on it for history class and one of the questions i have to answer is this but im not so sure…any opinions?

admin answers:

The World’s Columbian Exposition was a World’s Fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the New World in 1492. The fair had a profound effect on architecture, the arts, Chicago’s self-image, and American industrial optimism. Its scale and grandeur far exceeded the other world fairs, and it became a symbol of the emerging American Exceptionalism, much in the same way that the Great Exhibition became a symbol of the Victorian era United Kingdom.

The exposition was one influence leading to the rise of the City Beautiful movement. Results included grand buildings and fountains built around Olmstedian parks, shallow pools of water on axis to central buildings, larger park systems, broad boulevards and parkways and, after the turn of the century, zoning laws and planned suburbs. Examples of the City Beautiful movement’s works include the City of Chicago, the Columbia University campus, and the National Mall in Washington D.C.

[Notable firsts at the fair:

Phosphorescent lamps
F.W. Rueckheim introduced a confection of popcorn, peanuts and molasses, it was given the name Cracker Jack in 1896.
Congress of Mathematicians, precursor to International Congress of Mathematicians
Elongated coins
Frederick Jackson Turner lectured on his Frontier thesis.
Ferris Wheel
John T. Shayne & Company, the local Chicago furrier helped America gain respect on the world stage of manufacturing
Juicy Fruit gum
Quaker Oats
Cream of Wheat
Shredded Wheat
The hamburger was introduced to the United States
Milton Hershey bought a European exhibitor’s chocolate manufacturing equipment and added chocolate products to his caramel manufacturing business.
The United States Post Office Department produced its first picture postcards and Commemorative stamp set.
United States Mint offered its first commemorative coins: a quarter and half dollar.
Contribution to Chicago’s nickname, the “Windy City”. Some argue that Charles Anderson Dana of the New York Sun coined the term related to the hype of the city’s promoters. Other evidence, however, suggests the term was used as early as 1881 in relation to either Chicago’s “windbag” politicians or to its weather.
Scott Joplin’s performance at the exposition introduced ragtime to new audiences. The exposition attracted attention to the Chicago ragtime scene, led by patriarch Plunk Henry and exemplified in performance at the exposition by Johnny Seymour.
Violinist Joseph Douglass achieved wide recognition after his performance there and became the first African-American violinist to conduct a transcontinental tour and the first to tour as a concert violinist.
The first Indonesian music performance in the United States was at the exposition.
A group of hula dancers led to increased awareness of Hawaiian music among Americans throughout the country.
Stoughton Musical Society, the oldest choral society in the United States, presented the first concerts of early American music at the exposition.
The first Eisteddfod held outside of Wales was held in Chicago at the exposition.
The poet and humorist Benjamin Franklin King, Jr. First performed at the exposition.
The “clasp locker,” a clumsy slide fastener and forerunner to the zipper was demonstrated by Whitcomb L. Judson.
To hasten the painting process during construction of the fair in 1892, Francis Davis Millet invents spray painting.

Can You Ask All These Questions About Volcanoes?

I have a class activity that I should do a research about volcanoes, please help me with these questions and please tell your source(hope it is from a website):
*What are Natural Disasters?
*How does volcanoes occur?
*What are its precautions?
*In which countries do they often occur?
*What are the famous ones, where and when?

please if you have more information that are not answers to this questions say it.

admin answers:

Natural Disaster: the consequence of a natural hazard (e.g. Volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide) which affects human activities.
Site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_disaster

How do volcanoes occur: Volcanoes occur when the Earth’s plates pull apart causing magma to rise to the surface. Volcanoes can also occur over hotspots and where one plate dives beneath another, forcing magma to rise to the surface. Plates diving under one another is known as subduction.
Site: http://library.thinkquest.org/10136/volcano/volctq.htm

Volcano precautions:
*Have a supply of filter masks to protect the nose and mouth and goggles to protect the eyes.
*Keep a 3-day supply of canned food and bottled water on hand, as severe fallout may hamper local travel.
*Close all doors, windows and vents around the house. Temporarily cover roof vents and air conditioning intakes during periods of ash fall. Place towels under doors and in other gaps.
*Cover air intakes and vent openings on all motorized electronic appliances, stereo components, and computers. Shut down and discontinue use of these appliances until ash fall has stopped and appropriate cleaning has occurred.
*Cover boats and recreational vehicles.
Site: http://www.statefarm.com/learning/disasters/learning_disas_volcano.asp

Countries where they occur: Volcanoes usually occur on the edges of plates, similar to where earthquakes occur. A lot of volcanoes occur in the area around the edge of the Pacific ocean called the Pacific Ring of Fire. Volcanoes can also occur in the middle of plates, in hotspots. One such hotspot has formed the Hawaiian islands chain. As the earth rotated, it passed over the hotspot and new islands were formed.

Famous Volcanoes:
* Mt. Mazama, Ore. (lost its top in series of eruptions about 7,000 years ago, eventually forming Crater Lake)
* Mt. Vesuvius, Italy (buried Pompeii in AD 79)
* Mt. Fuji, Japan (picturesque symbol of Japan; last erupted in 1707)
* Mt. Tambora, Indonesia (1815 eruption caused “a year without summer” in 1816)
* Llullaillaco, Argentina-Chile (world’s tallest active volcano at 22,109 feet; last erupted in 1877)
* Krakatau, Indonesia (1883 eruption wiped out island, colored sunsets around the world for two years)
* Mt. Pelee, Martinique (only two people in nearby town of 30,000 survived 1902 blast)
* Lassen Peak, Calif. (1917 eruption was last in 48 contiguous states–until Mt. St. Helens)
* Mt. St. Helens, Wash. (1980 eruption killed 57)
* Mauna Loa, Hawaii (world’s largest active volcano; last erupted in 1984)

Robert asks…

How did Hawaii get its name/nickname???

???

admin answers:

There is a whole bunch of theories:

1) Hawa means homeland and i’i stands for small. So, it is like “small homeland”
[Shearer, Benjamin F. And Barbara S. State Names, Seals, Flags and Symbols Greenwood Press, Westport, Connecticut – 1994]
Modern native Hawai’ians came to Hawai’i from Tahiti around 1300. They brought wild pigs and some plants from Tahiti and made Hawai’i their home. So, a theory of Hawa+i’i meaning “small homeland” is very solid. If you think about it, we say “Little Italy about the area in Manhattan where first Italian immigrants used to live.

2) Hawaii Loa is believed to be the first discoverer of Hawaii. That is his name, so it might be the case that we call these islands Hawai’i because of his first name. Loa means “long” or “very”. He was a chief of a Polinesian people who came to Hawaii around 400 a.d. From Marqueses.

3) in Hawaiian Dictionary by Pukui and Elbert:
Elsewhere in Polinesia, Hawai’i means “underworld” or “ancestral home” . But in Hawai’i it has no meaning.

4) British explorer Captain James Cook was the first European to discover Hawai’i. He reported its name in the following spelling: Owyhee.
Ok, now this is a little bit out there, but if you translate “O wai” into English, you get a question word like “who? Whose? Whom?”. O wai might have been the beginning of the question “Who are you?”

5) wai means water, ha may stand for “breath” or “spirit”, ‘i would point at the location. But that does not make any sence.

Nicknames:

1. Sandwich Islands. Captain Cook – the first European to discover Hawaii – named them after his sponsor John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

2. Aloha state. Aloha is a form of greeting in Hawaiian. It means hi, good bye, as well as love. The islands are called this way because of the concept of Aloha spirit that become wide known when the islands became a popular touristic destination. Basically, aloha spirit stands for friendliness and hospitality of Native Hawaiians who welcome everybody who comes to Hawaii.
3. Pineapple state. This is one of industries that played an important role in economical development of Hawai’i. You can still find some pineapple plantations there.
