Ruth asks…

What will happen if I only eat junk food?

If I eat:

8 chocolate bars a day (reese’s cups, one reese “package” has 3 cups, i eat 8 packages)
1 big family chips, for myself.
Water
2 Pizza’s
Soft drink (Coke)
Soft drink (Barbican – Apple)
and SOMETIMES cereal

I am:

14 years old, 90 pounds. i am not fat, even if i wanted to i can never be fat, i am pretty short in height for my age, im as tall as grade 6’s (11 year olds), but maybe a tad taller. so i guess im 150 something centimeters or maybe in the low 160 centimeters, i am pretty late on “puberty” i have little to no hair on my legs or arms, and no hair on my armpits. my voice isn’t developing either, it’s a really high pitched voice lol. oh and if you wanna know my mom is 178 cm (people say she’s so tall) and my dad is 175 cm, my younger brother (12 year old) is pretty tall for his age and he’s taller than me LOL, he does eat healthier than me by far. and my 11 year old brother, im taller than him by a tad. In grade 7 i made top 11 people that have the best stamina (all grade 7s had to do it, and top 15 get to go cross country to support the school, i was 11th place from ALL grade 7s) but right now i prob lost my energy as i seem to get tired quickly.

Thanks for helping and reading this.
By the way: I am a very picky eater and i am not satisfied with “regular & boring” foods, for example rice, apples, oranges. I like foods that are NOT homemade, they taste so much better. my brothers think my moms food tastes good but to me the food she makes is disgusting (well i can eat it, but i dont since im not satisfied with the “not very delicious” food.)

admin answers:

It does not matter how skinny you are or tall or whatever you can eat all that and lets say you dont gain weight so you would probably be like cool im eating okay then right? WRONG it is what is going on inside your body that counts. There was a teenager in the UK that ate only top ramen she looked fine but when they ran tests she had the health of a 90 year old person. Your body needs proteins fats and carbs to survive and maintain optimal levels for EVERYTHING in your body. All you are eating are simple carbs (turns into fat and sugar), eating a ton of sugar which comes from the reeses, soda, and the cereal you are probably eating which is the sugary kind i assume, and the chips are just a bunch of sodium and unhealthy fats just like the reeses and pizza are.

The fact that you play sports is great but what your giving your body is not. The reason why you are tired is because your are not getting adequate nutrition. Everything you have listed here is an AWFUL diet your body needs the right nutrition it is vital for everything in your body trust me what you are eating is not healthy for your inner body. Especially since your going through puberty your body is going through many changes and you have to help it out by eating good.

Find foods you like that are not these that you have listed. Chicken, fish, beef, whatever it does not matter how you prepare it it will be better than what you are eating right now. Im surprised your parents have not stopped you from eating like this but i digress. Anyways fast food IS NOT THE ANSWER it is extremely unhealthy and you are only hurting yourself in the long run i assure you just take baby steps to changing your diet and you will feel and look better i promise hope you read/ take this advice!

Steven asks…

When should a litter of kittens be taken from their mother?

My friend is moving out of the country in a month and she wants me to have her cat who’s pregnant. The kittens will be born soon but last time she had 7. I cant really have the mum because I have two boys already, they are neutered but they will fight with her. If I don’t have the kittens, they and their mum will be given to the RSPCA and I don’t really want that to happen. I’m willing to look after all the kittens and find them new homes or keep some (I was meant to have some anyway). What should I do?
How should I feed them and take care of them if I take them from their mum?
How should I feed them and take care of them if I take them from their mum?
How should I feed them and take care of them if I take them from their mum?

admin answers:

The kittens should be allowed to remain with their mother for a minimum of 8 weeks.

– The milk produced by the mother in the first 72 hours is called colostrum and provides the kittens with much needed antibodies to fight off infection. If removed immediately from the mother then the kittens will not receive this milk putting them at higher risk of infection not only as kittens but later on in life.

If you want to hand rear:
Careful consideration should be given to whether you really have the time and commitment to hand rear multiple numbers of kittens. This is not something you can change your mind about part way because you want to go out for the evening, are tired or have school or work commitments.

– New-born kittens need to be fed every 2-3 hours throughout the day and NIGHT – if you are NOT in a position to provide them with this basic initial care then DON’T even consider hand rearing. (then consider multiplying the feeding time of even 4 kittens by 15 mins each and you might as well not go to bed) – kittens begin to wean off milk at approx. 4 wks. Kittens must receive the correct amount of liquid milk/water to provide them with nutrition but also to prevent them from becoming dehydrated. Consideration should also be given to the cost to be incurred by having to purchase a special formula.

– After feeding you need to help them ‘eliminate’ this is done by taking a dampened piece of cotton wool and stimulating their anal/genital area with gentle rubbing (the mother would normally do this by licking them.) This can take up to 3 wks to ensure that they are able to do it independently, and when they are starting to get the hang of using a litter box.

– You will need to keep and eye on the kittens body temperature ensuring it does not become chilled (they do not shiver to let you know) or over-heated as they are unable to maintain or control their own body temperature, this is usually done via warmth when snuggling up to their mother.

– Given all of the above you basically have to consider that for at least 6 wks you are going to have to be with them 24/7 – No excuses or prior engagements withstanding. And I’ve just detailed the basics.

Sorry if this all sounds very off putting but I think it best that you give it a lot of consideration and make a decision based on reality rather than just on the ‘cute’ factor of hand-rearing.

Although hand rearing is time consuming the hardest bit is actually when it comes to re-homing them as you have become very attached by that point. Some people just can’t do it – think of the horror stories where the RSPCA etc have had to go into houses filled with cats and kittens numbering in the dozens. When the mother is there to bring up the kittens there isn’t such a hands on emotional attachment.

BTW: Even if mother and future kittens where to go to the RSPCA the chances are the kittens would find homes fairly easily, being small and cute, and it is the older cats that generally have re-homing problems. Think of your own situation – you are willing to take the kittens but make the assumption that your neutered males will fight with the mother. Not necessarily true. They may never be best friends but there is no guarantee that your boys will readily accept and get on with a kitten/s. All the cats I had for re-homing lived in my house and were not segregated (max 8 cats at a time). There were the odd spats for pecking order but no more serious than the odd spats my permanent boys had (litter brothers). And bear in mind that while my acceptable maximum was 8 cats these, bar for my 2 permanent boys, were always changing as they were re-homed and another took their place (male or female).

As I said before sorry if this sounds negative, but better to go into it with you eyes wide open.

Anyway, whatever you decide I wish you well.

Mandy asks…

What do I do when my abs are fading?

Thanks for reading everybody.
So I’m 17 years old and im about 124 lbs and 5 feet 6 inches. I had a 4 pack of abs without flexing since I was young. For about a year my abs havent been looking the greatest. I recently went out of country and I ate terrible. When I was out of country, the most exercise i really had was playing catch with my brother for about 30 minutes. I was out of country for 17 days and i was just being lazy. I did go for short walks too. Now, my abs barely look like a 2 pack without flexing. But, i dont eat that healthy and im not that smart when it comes to nutrition. After i came back home, i realized that i didnt have american food for a while so i ate a lot of terrible food. I ate a lot of croissants that have sooo much saturated and total fat. I also ate the biggest bag of sweet n’ spicy chili doritos. I ate about 12 cookies from the bakery that has hydrogenated vegetable oil (trans fat). I also ate pretzels with peanut butter in the middle of them. I had chocolate almond milk and I had about 7 nature valley crunch granola bars (dark chocolate, peanut butter and roasted almond flavors) in one sitting. Every other snack was finished in 2 days. I wasnt smart about what I did but i was seriously craving them. I felt terrible for eating that too.
Here is my usual diet during the school year:
breakfast
big bowl of raisin bran with 2% milk
Lunch at school
Chicken patty(probably fried) – 2 or 3 times a week
3 peanut butter sandwiches – 2 or 3 times a week
usually a fruit like an apple every day
Lunch at home
Big bowl of white rice with vegetable curry
2-4 nature valley granola bars
1 cup of 2%milk
sometimes i’d also drink a homemade smoothie. It would have milk, avocados, a banana and some strawberries.
I usually ate more or something that was in the fridge. i would eat 2-3 nutella or peanut butter sandwiches. I usually ate that before my lunch b/c i needed snacks when i came home.
Whenever i eat something really good, i cant stop and i keep on eating. i have to eat healthier.
for a couple of months, i’ve been avoiding an ingredient called high fructose corn syrup. My bread doesnt have it. But, i realized that bread isnt good b/c it makes you gain weight. Now, i eat about 2 handfuls of almonds everyday. i drink about half a bottle of water per day which is bad. I try to drink more but the only think i drink is milk, i dont drink soda. i want some diet plans, i want to eat healthy. i dont want to eat junkfood anymore.

during the school year i slept about 5-6 hours a night and in the summer i sleep around 6 hours b/c i usually wake up and i cant fall asleep. i think more sleep would be better and i sleep at like 12 am, 1am and sometimes 2am now and during school. i need to sleep early.

im starting to play basketball about an hour a day (or longer) and i try to swim about 4 times a week. I usually swim for about 15-20 doing the freestyle. Im not a good swimmer, i swim really slow and i have no stamina. i swim b/c i like the sport and i started swimming about 1 or 2 months ago. before this year, i used to play basketball like everyday and i was maybe 110 lbs, so thats why my abs were probably better. During school, I do gymnastics, but i only do rings. Im not at an amazing level and i know that im not close to being at college level.. i just do it b/c i like doing it and usually during gymnastics season, my abs look pretty good without flexing. during gym class, i lift weights and i lift for about 25 minutes with breaks and i spot my friend, so i dont lift too long. when gymnastics wasnt in season, i’d try to lift about 3 times a week for an hour after school. I only started lifting after school about halfway into the school year. during the school year, i dont do cardio often so that could be another reason why my abs are bad, there’s fat.
I don’t really work on my abs too often, I do it about 1-3 times a week. should i do it everyday?
Do you have any ab tips? diet tips? i want to lose a couple of lbs of fat. i just want my belly fat to go away. thanks for reading! please give feedback, tips or comments. thanks!

admin answers:

Abs take less time to recover than other muscles and should be done more often. But they do need some rest. They also require more repetitions, 15-30. Try doing abs every other day or 3 times a week. Working them out every day can actually work against you, because you’ll be breaking down muscle that’s already broken down without giving it a chance to recover and grow. Try doing at least 3 different abs exercises, at least 5 sets an exercise and 15-30 reps a set for each ab workout. Sometimes with abs your own body weight isn’t heavy enough, for example with decline sit ups, you can hold a 10, 25, or 45 pound plate to your chest. The weight should feel heavy, but you should; be able to maintain good form. Make sure to focus on controlling the weight with your abs slowly through a full range of motion. No flinging, jerking or quick movements. Don’t just go through the motions without thinking. Hold for a moment and squeeze abs at peak contraction. To build muscle you need a calorie surplus. A general rule of thumb you can follow is for daily calories multiply your weight by 18. Try and get at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight a day. The rest of your calories comes from carbs and fat which also play a role in building muscle. Stick with clean food like lean meat like chicken, whole grains, low fat dairy, raw fruit, raw and steamed vegetables, healthy fat like olive oil and nuts.

Some good ab exercise are:

Decline Sit Ups
Seated Ab Machine
Crunches (on one of those big exercise balls)
Roman Chair Sit Ups
Reverse Crunches
Hanging Leg Raises

The leaner you are, the more noticeable your abs will be. To lose fat you need a calorie deficit – consume less calories than you burn. Try eating about 500 calories less a day than what you need to maintain weight. Avoid refined sugar and saturated fat. Decrease carbohydrates, so you are using more stored body fat for energy. Keep eating at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight and lifting heavy to keep the muscle you have. You can also add in cardiovascular exercise. At least 30 minutes at least 3 times a week. Running, walking, biking, swimming.

It’s best to focus on either building muscle or losing fat. You can do both at the same time, but it is a much slower process. Your efforts for one goal will conflict with your efforts for the other. So it’s best to alternate a building phase and cutting phase.

Meal ideas are:
egg whites and oatmeal
cottage cheese and peaches
turkey sandwich made with whole grain bread
tuna with mustard and chopped celery on whole grain bread
baked chicken, brown rice and broccoli
baked fish, sweet potato and asparagus

Questions about getting a Budgie in a budget?

I have always wanted a parakeet (or even a bird in general), but have always had the thought they were really expensive. Then I found out that budgies are only $30! So, I’ve been hard pressed on getting one. I only have $250 to work with, and i’m a complete beginner so i lack even the basics. I want 2 budgies and plan on placing the cage next to my aquarium, and depending on the cage size, a few feet away or next to my TV. (Btw, the TV volume is rarely ever on, much less loud, as my brother and I mainly game on it with a headset). So, using this information, I really need to answers to these questions:

-What size cage will I need to house the budgies, if possible, please provide a link for one in the $100-$200 range?
-Will the budgies be too messy to be where i’m placing them? (I plan on very regular cleaning schedule)
-What other supplies will be necessary for their nutrition and health?
-Will I need to put a barrier between them and the fish?
-My brother and his friend will practice bass and guitar for their band (with an amp). Will I have to move, or let out, my budgies during this time?
-I am in many advance school courses at school, ad will only have about 2 and half hours a day for interaction, is this enough?
-Will a green budgie and a blue budgie mate?

Also… I’m in a kind of stalemate with my grandfather as he does not want me to get birds, he said that he’s tired of animals and has owned everything (my uncle brought home a lot of animals ranging from feild mice to a mountain boomer lizard). I am a responsible pet owner of 2 dogs. I accidentally let my aquarium go bad with a real bad time with depression… over that. Other than that I’ve kept good care of it for 3 years. So, as a bonus, how can I convince him to say yes? He never comes upstairs because he’s handicapped, and I will keep the area clean, he knows that. What else could I say?

Thank you very much in advance. And an extreme thank you to those who help with convincing my grandfather…

admin answers:

Hello!

What size cage will I need to house the budgies, if possible, please provide a link for one in the $100-$200 range?

A) Minimum cage size is 18″x 18″x 24″, bar spacing is 1/2″
I suggest you can go online to Craigslist(where i bought my budgie and cage/stand with food for $20)
Or Walmart! Craigslist is much, MUCH more cheap like around $20-$150

Will the budgies be too messy to be where i’m placing them? (I plan on very regular cleaning schedule)

A) I don’t think you should place them by the fish, because some budgies “spit” the seed shell out instead of drop. (like mine) And might fly into your fishes tank, so better safe or sorry!
Meet this criteria and they’ll be the perfect spot:

-The back of the cage must touch a wall.
-Any nearby windows must have blinds, shudders or curtains.
-The room must be away from the kitchen.
-The cage cannot be in direct sunlight.
-There should be no air fresheners in the entire house! (very important)
-The cage should not be in the basement as these areas are normally cold.
-The room the cage is in must be frequented be people. (A room like family room or den etc.)

What other supplies will be necessary for their nutrition and health?

A) Not much, you will need a cuttle bone or a mineral block and feed them veggies daily.
SOME veggies you can feed are on this site:
http://www.birds-online.de/nahrung/gruenfutter/gemuese_en.htm

My brother and his friend will practise bass and guitar for their band (with an amp). Will I have to move, or let out, my budgies during this time?

A) When your brother starts to play, make sure he doesn’t suddenly goes, “BRANG! BOOM BOOM! BANG!” Start off quiet and increase the volume, then your budgies 85% will like it!
They like loud noise, but you cant start off crazy or they will be scared.
It’s like if your just sitting down and relaxing and suddenly, a plate dropped on the ground!

I am in many advance school courses at school, ad will only have about 2 and half hours a day for interaction, is this enough?

A) I think so, if you buy 1 budgie you will need to be with it more. If you buy 2+ you will not need to spend time with it that much. BUT, if you buy 2+ budgies it will be much harder to interact and bond with your budgies since they can do that by themselves.

By interacting with them you can:

– Read a book aloud
– Sing a song
– Do your homework
– Talk to them
– Feed and reward them (if needed)
– Let them out of cage (if you know how to)

Will a green budgie and a blue budgie mate?

A) Yes, any color budgie can mate. But you will have to know that they could turn to be ANY colour.
Like purple, green, and blue. Also getting them mate will require time, they might not even like each other and will end up just being friends! Also if they mate they might not even have chicks!

The female will have to have LOTS of nutrients, and MUST eat them!

Requirements

* You must have a breeding cage that is at least 24L X 16W X 16H
* At least 2 sturdy perches made out of wood.
* A cuttlebone
* A Vitamin block
* Food, water dishes or dispensers
* A Nest box that can be affixed to the outside of the cage
* And a well balanced seed and pellet diet

You will need to buy more items, possibly going over $300. Because she could lay from 2-9 or even over!

Please be prepared for the unexpected if you plan on them mating!

If not do not get a girl and a boy. Either 2 females or 2 males!
I recommend males, males are more active and interactive! Females lay infertile eggs at young ages,
(eggs that don’t hatch) Even though she didn’t mate with anyone she will lay infertile eggs!

CONVINCING GRANDFATHER:

Tell him how much you want it, that you will 100% care for it and do my best to pay for the expenses!
Also research the animal so if he asks any questions you are ready to bust!
Act mature and confident, don’t be like, “But papa! Please! Why not?” This gets them >:(

(I will edit this convincing grandfather topic later!)

Hope I helped! 😀

Nancy asks…

How many sets should you do for each muscle (10 points)?

Hey guys, just short intro of body. umm, im 16 years old, medium frame, like 11% bodyfat but i still have alot of untoned fat on *** and legs especially and around body in general. I have a decent build (dont like to brag) for a beginner. More muscle mass than when my brother started (he’s 21) I have gifted muscular calfs..um pretty small back delts and bony back when standing normal :/

My brother said he does 16-20 sets for chest and same with legs and back,He has a decent build but maybe it could be better if he did something else im not sure.

I have to do these at home until i get a gym membership so dumbells and chin/pull up bar only.
I do this:
Monday: Shoulders/traps
tuesday: chest/triceps
wednesday: biceps/back
thursday: Legs
friday:forearms/abs

Now im just wondering for each day and my muscle target. how many sets should i do in total for each? for example 12 chest and 9 triceps for tuesday. Please only answer if you actually know what you’re saying and have a good build in that case, i dont want to under train or over train. just give an estimate, e.g 12-16 sets. Thank you :’) 10 points

admin answers:

16 to 20 sets is far to much and means you wouldn’t be putting full intensity in to it if you do that many. If your doing it naturally ( by which I mean no steroids and you definitely shouldn’t be using them at your age). I,ve trained for 15 years and learnt in that time that to many sets hinders any growth so heres what I recommend, chest, back, legs = no more than 12 sets, shoulders, traps, biceps, triceps= no more than 9 sets. This means you can apply good intensity and use heavy weights to stimulate muscle growth but please don’t forget the most important thing about training which is good nutrition and adequate rest. Abs and calfs can be trained more often than other muscle groups, example every 2 or 3 days. Good luck.
