Your Questions About Fitness Connection

Thomas asks…

Is there any connection between physical fitness and labor?

I realize this may be a bit of a silly question, but, what the heck, I’m curious.

Of all the pregnant women I’ve know, the ones who are in shape tend to give birth sooner, and the ones who aren’t tend to give birth later.

For instance, I have a cousin who has probably never exercised a day in her life (which remained true throughout the pregnancy) and she didn’t go into labor until she reached 39 weeks and 5 days.

But two of my aunts exercised nearly every day, power-walking and doing pilates and water aerobics. They went into labor during their 37th and 38th weeks.

So, is there any connection with this? The fitter you are, the sooner you will give birth? Or is just a coincidence?

Thanks in advance!

There could be a connection, because walking is one of the things that is reccomended to bring on and speed up labor, but I don’t think that excercising can do anything to make the baby be ready any faster. I think in the cases of those two people going early, it was probably just a coincidence. It could be any combination of getting the dates a bit wrong, genetics, or maybe they excercised TOO much and put themselves into early labor.

My sister-in-law didn’t excercize, and was put on bed rest for the last 2 months of her pregnancy, and gained around 60 pounds. She had her baby at… 2 days overdue, I think. I gained only 25 lbs, went walking (not everyday, but at least weekly), and was about averagely fit (if that makes sense) to begin with, and I NEVER went into labor. I went in for an induction and ended up with a cesarean because my son was breech.

I have read that being overall fit makes labor easier, though!

Is it possible to get free fitness advice online?

Is it possible to get free fitness advice online as I just had a baby and would love to get fit. However there are three influencing factors – 1. I have an old knee injury which affects me when I try any aerobic activities (jogging etc) 2. I have a really slow connection which rules out downloading exercise videos. 3. I live off the beaten path so the exercise would have to be home based.
Any advice as to how to get fit would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa asks…

What’s the difference between an all women’s health club/gym and a health club where both men and women?

My husband tells me that I should join a women’s health club because the exercise equipment there is more suited for women’s bodies. I don’t believe him. I think the only difference is that men are not allowed to join at the women’s club (like Curve’s) while you’ll find both women and men at the regular health clubs like Gold’s gym, Bally’s, Fitness Connection. Please someone confirm for me if there is any other difference. I also feel that if I join a women’s only club, there will be less variety of equipment and less classes for me to participate in than if I join a regular health club/gym.
This is in the United States (Texas to be more precise).

admin answers:

Depending on the club, there is little difference between men’s and women’s equipment or facilities. To me the real reason that there are all-women’s clubs is not just to keep away the men who want to hit on women, but there are a lot of women who feel self-conscious about their “imperfect” bodies and just feel more comfortable in an environment where they don’t have that added embarassment of the opposite sex watching them as they are trying to improve themselves.
