Your Questions About Fitness Boot Camp Ideas

Sandy asks…

What are the pre-entry weight requirements for the marines? USAF, Navy, and Army requirements would be useful.?

I’ve been trying to find an answer to this question but all the research I’ve done has lead me to weight requirements after you’re in. Unless the answers truly are telling me that I need to already be at maximum fitness by the time I attempt to enroll and therefore rendering the idea of boot camp useless… Thank you for your response.
*Starr*
Yeah, that’s true, YouAgain. It still would be nice if I didn’t have to wait until my weight goes down because that’ll take a little while, at least healthfully. I’m 5’5″ to 5″6 which I believe is 55 to 66.
Erm, what I meant was that the physical part of boot camp would be almost useless. I know there’s a lot more to it. I’m pretty much frustrated at having to wait – but of course that’s my fault for gaining so much ^_~.

admin answers:

Well, can’t really answer the question until you provide your height.

You should be in shape when you enlist because boot camp isn’t just there as an excercise program, so therefore it is not rendered useless just because you go in in peak condition.

Boot camp is there to condition you in more ways than just physically.

Edit: Here’s what i could find, but any recruiter would have provided this information for you. I’m going with the height of 5’5 because well when it comes to enlisting, you’re one or the other, not in between. Also, I don’t know how old you are, and the ages do make a difference…I’m going to assume you’re in the 16-20 range, if you’re in the next one up (21-24, just add a few pounds).

Marine Corps: 104-142
You can get a waiver if you’re heavier, but you having to be under 26% body fat and achieve a 2nd class score on the PFT

Air Force: 114-165
They have the same weight chart for males and females and adhere to the BMI chart (which is friggin inaccurate and generic as hell) and those with a BMI of greater than 27.5 must be taped to make sure they’re within the AF Body Fat standards.

Army: 104-141
If you’re over the weight limit, you’re taped for body fat %, which for the 17-20 age range is 30%. If you are over the body fat %, then you won’t be able to enlist (at least until you’re under weight or under the %).

Navy: 104-160
They also will tape you if you’re over weight. If you’re at 33% body fat or less you may DEP and ship regardless of weight.

And as for the physical part of boot camp being useless if you’re already in peak condition, this too is wrong. Because even though you may be in good shape, boot camp will still challenge you physically in different ways. Two examples: one friend went and he is really strong, does a lot of weight lifting, but he struggle when it came to the running because he never did a lot of cardio. Another friend was the total opposite, excellent runner, but not very strong and he struggled where it came to needing physical strength to complete tasks. Not to mention, even when you’re pt’ing, running, marching, hiking, etc., you’re still doing more than just pt’ing.

Be glad that you have to wait to get your weight down and strength up. I’m sure boot camp is no walk in the park even if you are in shape and to add on to that not being in shape? Not something I’d want to go through, that’s for sure. Not only will you be on a restricted diet, but you’ll be a target for DI’s looking for recruits who can’t keep up.

I know where you’re coming from, I’m trying to get my weight down too…my body fat is at 22% so technically I can go in under tape, but I’d rather be in better shape before I do it. It’s frustrating, but it’s worth it.

James asks…

Could I drive to the arctic circle from Toronto in a hire car, what might be the problem with that?

The only decent way to travel independently and cheaply from the UK to Canada is with Canadian affair I have found, but my only destination airport is Toronto and though I am sure there is a lot going on in this great city, I hate cities and cannot really do much more than a day in one. I am not a townie.

I would like to hire a car and travel for about 10 days, where would you head?, What would represent to you a decent 10 day fly drive holiday to Canada?, with the pick up and drop off airport being Toronto. I am single man and am comfortably off, but that doesn’t mean I like “pampering” or any of that nonsense. I like driving.

I like the wild, even camping, but I am not that fussed about digging a pit to have a crap in (but I would, if my hand was forced, by a top class adventure),

I am OK in the fitness dept, swim strongly but I am going to be on a holiday, so no route marching, climbing, or heavy portage, or boot camp.

You must have some ideas, please help.

As the other posters have said Canada is a big place and depending on how long you drive per day it can take a minimum of 5 hours just to drive out of the province to the east from Toronto and 2 to 3 days going west. Even to Canadians there are degrees of wilderness the people from Toronto think Algonquin park is way out in the boon docks but to others it is too developed. Just a few hours out of Toronto you should start seeing nothing but rocks, tree, and bush along the highway (motorway).

I’ve pasted a couple of links below for white water rafting, I’ve been with both of these companies years ago and both were excellent although I prefer Esprit (first link). I’ve also taken my Kayak certification with the kayaking link and they were great too, they have tour packages in the 1000 islands. There is Jet Boating in the Montreal area (5-6 hours east from Toronto) but I haven’t done it and therefore can not offer an opinion other than it looks fun. Quebec city is a nice place of see it is a UNESCO World Heritage site (new by UK standards only 300 years old)

A word of warning though DO NOT tell the hire car agency that you are taking the car out of province as they will charge you extra, and keep the driver’s door towards the centre of the road to be on the correct side and look left when crossing the streets.

Have a good time here and safe home

Robert asks…

How do you track who gets “in shape” the quickest for a bet?

Hello,

A woman I work with has been down on herself lately because shes leaning towards the heavier side. Having felt a little on the pudgy side since boot camp I figured I would spark a little competition and bet bet her something on who could get in shape in 4 to 5 months time.

Rules would be that we couldn’t use any GNC products or anything that would compromise integrity. This means that we would not be able to take creatine, any kind of steroids, no supplements, and we would have to stick to healthy foods (No burgers, fries, ice cream, chocolate). We’re pretty honest people so theres an understanding here.

Our problem is actually coming up with a way to track this. We plan on tracking this someway each month and then after 5 months we’ll declare a winner. Winner of course takes whatever was put into the “pot” during the bet.

What I need is ideas on how to track our fitness and what we should bet. We’ve realized that money is probably not a good thing to bet. We need something more worthwhile and enjoyable.

Shoot some ideas out there for me!

You can measure weight loss based not on how many pounds, but my what percentage of weight lossed to where you started. So if you started at 200 and lost 20, you lost 10%. You can do it by who loses the most percentage.

Or

Take measurments and BMI. Most gyms will do this for you, so if you join one you can have them do it in the beginning and at the end to decide.

Either bet money or eahc of you can contribute $50 and then buy a $100 gift certificate to a clothing store you each like. This way the winner can get some new summer clothes.

Sharon asks…

Dizziness & fatigue while working out ?

I know this isn’t the right place to ask because I should ask a doctor but I’m waiting for my appointment and in the meantime I would like to know your opinion.

So I have been exercising for about a month now. I am overweight and have been alternating riding my bicycle and doing an at home fitness video (Walk at Home Boot Camp). The exercise is NOT a rigorous work out. I do sweat but I am not going crazy working out. But every time I work out I feel light headed and dizzy and sometimes I feel like passing out. The DVD is only 45 minutes long and I drink water before, during and after my workout. I have been taking a whole food multivitamin EVERY SINGLE DAY as well as Herbalife Formula 1 meal replacement shakes. I have only lost about 7 pounds since I’ve been working out but I have no idea why I don’t feel invigorated or have this high energy after working out. I can’t even push myself because I get too dizzy and fatigued before I can even get to that point.

Any one have an idea what’s wrong ?

admin answers:

It could be a temporary shortage of blood or oxygen. Or even low blood sugar, make sure that you’re eating enough.

Dizziness and fatigue while working out ???? Help 10 points !?

admin answers:

Although meal replacement shakes “could” help you.. I do not think they are the right way to go. You see shakes are quickly absorbed and digested.. If you ate more fiberous food or raw vegetables you would feel fuller longer and your body would take more energy to digest..

And you have only been doing it a month! You have to keep at it and make sure your properly hydrated. I know you are drinking lots of water.. But if you ate fruits like watermelon or peaches or something juicy it would hydrate you too!

When you feel light headed and dizzy it is time to put the video on pause.. Lay on your back and try to do some crunches or take a breather

after a while as your body gets more and more used to working out you will become more well adjusted and the dizzyness and shortness of breath will lessen.
