There are a huge number of reasons why people fail in their goal of lean ripped abs, lets be honest, if it were that simple then we would all be wandering around with the body of a Greek God and women would be falling at our feet!!

 

The secret is to stay focused and realistic, so here are a few tips to begin with.

 

1: Goal Setting

 

You simply have to have a set of goals to work towards, and you need to be as specific as you can. It is utterly pointless turning up at your local gym every now and again and just hoping that lean ripped abs will just appear from nowhere.

 

Your goals need to be written down and they need to be revised on a regular basis as you progress through your training plan. Without a set goal you will just wander around aimlessly before eventually just giving up in frustration.

 

2: Form & Technique

 

Never ever sacrifice form and technique in order to lift more weight. The main focus of your training plan is to stimulate the specific muscle group you are working on. We are working on developing ripped abs, we are not powerlifters! Powerlifters are massively strong and normally huge but invariably they don’t have lean ripped abs.

 

Concentrate on great technique and breathing, making sure to squeeze the muscles and performing your routines in as slow and controlled a manner as you possibly can.

 

3: Nutrition

 

I can’t stress this point strongly enough. Excellent nutrition is vital to any training plan, but is even more essential when your goal is lean ripped abs.

 

Ripped abs can only appear once you have reduced your body fat percentage to a low enough level for them to become visible, so it is a good idea to have a well thought out diet plan. A diet thats high in fibre, low in fat and protein rich is an absolute must.

 

4: Positive Thinking

 

Now I know that we are working on our bodies here in our quest for ripped abs, but it would be foolish to neglect the relevance of a positive mindset. You just have to believe in yourself to succeed in your quest, if you don’t then you simply have no chance.

 

You have to be disciplined in your training and consistent in your approach. Don’t just turn up once a week and expect miracles, it simply will not happen! Try not to beat yourself up when things don’t go according to plan. There is a fair chance that you may fall off the wagon from time to time, the key is to jump straight back on and you will definitely get there.

 

Try to develop a positive mindset and believe in yourself and those lean ripped abs can become your reality!

5 Ab Exercises That Work

These five exercises will have you working your way towards great abs in no time at all.

#1 – The Deadlift
Known as the king of exercises, the deadlift isn’t for wimps. As one of the three core lifts of international powerlifters, the deadlift is associated with big, musclebound strongmen. Don’t get worried though, deadlifts won’t make you look like a giant overnight. It takes a very specific diet to get the type of physique that those guys have, and without it, deadlifts will simply work out your legs, back, and abs very effectively. A true must for any ab routine.

#2 – The Squat
While the squat is primarily a leg exercise, it relies on the abdominals in order to keep the body straight and safe during the lift. When you’re balancing weight on your shoulders, your body needs to engage your abdominals to keep itself upright. Move through the movement and keep your abs reasonably tense, and your chest puffed out. While your legs may ache right afterwards, it’ll be your abs that see the true benefit in a couple of months.

#3 – The Sit Up
This is a classic abdominal isolation exercise, and is incredibly effective when performed alongside the two other major lifts. For best results, do your sit ups at the end of your weights routine, and after any major cardio. Isolation exercises are always best done at the end of your routine, as they stress muscle groups that have already been exercised in your major lifts.

#4 – The Military Press
This is another weighted exercise, and one that also exercises your chest, shoulders and arms. In order to engage the abdominals, you need to stand upright while performing this lift — sitting down takes the strain off your abdominals and instead places it on your legs. Simply push your weights from shoulder height to above your head, all the while using your abdominals to keep your body straight and upright.

#5 – The Leg Raise
This one requires a small amount of equipment, but nothing that your local gym can’t provide. Another great exercise to end your routine with, the leg raise involved hanging from either a chin-up bar or a leg raise frame, and simply raising your legs to your waist, all the while keeping them perfectly straight and pointed. Save this one for the end of your routine — it’ll exhaust your stomach and leave your abs pumped.

No matter if you are a teen trying to get into shape or a grown woman returning to the world of fitness, a harder and flatter stomach is the final goal for many a person.

Because of this, this topic is covered in plenty of fitness myths and revolutionary ideas and is especially susceptible to fancy machines and ideas that claim to give a rock hard 6-pack in  weeks, yet do absolutely nothing.

This article does not claim to give “rock hard abs” in a week, but instead serves to try to change the views some people have gotten from watching too many infomercials at 2AM.

  1. You Can’t Spot-Reduce This means that you can’t burn fat only from a specific spot on your body. All the sit-ups in the world will not burn the fat on your gut. Bodyfat is lost from all over your body and is caused by a caloric deficit, not from activating a certain muscle group
  2. Cardio is Important The key to getting a 6-pack is not in building up the abdominals, but in burning the fat that is covering them. The way to achieve this is is to have a caloric deficit, which can be achieved by both taking in less calories and using up more calories. A form of cardio that is very effective for burning fat and boosting your metabolism is HIIT.HIIT is exercising in short bursts of intense cardio followed by a short cooldown. An example of a session would be a 30 second run, followed by a 30 second jog, followed by another sprint, and so on for 4 to 15 minutes depending on the fitness of person.
  3. Abs are made in the kitchen This is the least complex and yet the most difficult aspect in getting a 6-pack. The key to getting a 6-pack is to cut down on food and lose bodyfat. Here are some easily applicable tips:
    • Stop drinking soda and start to drink only water. It can make a huge difference.
    • Eat 5-6 small meals a day. This helps boost your metabolism and keeps your appetite in check.
    • Try to find your calorie maintenance level and gradually decrease 100-200 calories per week until your are shedding about 1-2 pounds a week.
  4. Sit-ups are useless Sit-ups are supposed to target the abs but really the hip flexors and spinal erectors are doing the work in the movement. The abdominals are only used isometrically as stabilizers. This means that sit-ups are terrible for your back and do not benefit your abs anyway.
  5. Other Exercises To Do Now this would be the time for me to plug some new life-changing product or idea, but that is not the point of this article. Here are some ab exercises for beginners to do instead of the traditional sit-up:
    • Crunches – There are many different types, but try to think of it as pulling your bottom rib directly to your hip
    • Weighted crunches – Do normal crunches except hold a plate to your chest
    • Hanging leg raises – hang from a bar and pull your knees directly to your chest
  6. Don’t Give Up! While achieving  your goal of a 6-pack may not be as painless and easy as infomercials may have you think, it is still a very realistic goal even for a beginner. All it takes hard work and determination. Giving up a week after you started will not help you get a six pack or help your your overall fitness.
