Your Questions About Tattoo Meaning Perseverance

John asks…

Japanese tattoo what should i get?

People I need more opinions on this I need to know if I’m being tricked into a bad tattoo I need an answer before my appointment on the 3rd.

Original Question

I want to get a small tattoo in Japanese that basically says “never give up.” Never quit, dont stop trying. Something along those lines. I would like suggestions only from native Japanese speakers please. Also the kana/kanji forms not romaji. I want to do this because I want a constant reminder that I should never quit learning Japanese as it has been a life long dream. I’m not fluent enough yet to write the phrase myself, but I can at least use my text books and Japanese dictionary to find out if people are trying to trick me. Thanks everyone.

Original Response

不撓不屈 (ふとうふくつ) die hard
刻苦勉励(こっくべんれい) work hard
臥薪嘗胆(がしんしょうたん) endurance and perseverance
百折不撓(ひゃくせつふとう) never give up never surrender

As you know, in Japan, male like the simple 4 letters idioms.

Choose any one you like, they are all the same sense.

Better, if you put them framed in a Japanese traditional playing card “HANAFUDA”.

For anyone that doesn’t have a serious answer, I’ve been studying Japanese and have exclusively watched Japanese television for the passed 12 years. I understand the culture and me and my girlfriend are saving up to move there to study abroad. Thanks for your sarcastic input but it’s people like you that prevent yahoo answers from being the wonderful community that it could be. And for the one sarcastic answer so far. I have no friends thank you very much. Have a nice day. I’m sure you have lots of friends with your sarcastic attitude though, so go spread your arrogance to them and not this community, thanks.

Chris asks…

Could anyone offer any ideas for a tattoo that would include: luck, perseverance, risk-taking??

I know it is very vague but any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Also: The quote “Fortune favors the bold” is one I would like to somehow incorporate into a tattoo, either directly or through symbolism….so that along with luck and perseverance

admin answers:

I think the tattoo itself indicates a certain level of risk-taking, while perseverance is shown through all the work you to find the perfect tat for you, and luck is shown by the quote =)

Honestly, go geek out on some tattoo artist portfolios, art books, and other things that inspire you. Brainstorm things in your own life that have meant luck, perseverance, and risk. Then take your ideas, even if they are vague, to a tattoo artist whose style you like and whom you trust. Consultations are always free, and you can have a bit of a dialogue about exactly what you want, and come up with something together that will be perfect for you.

Good luck!

William asks…

meaning of the koi tattoo: swimming upwards or downwards?

ok, well I’m planning on getting a koi tattoo in the future (I already have a tattoo, so I know what to expect)
I love what it signifies, because it will have some meaning to my past.
I have read up on koi tattoos for a while, and I know the whole history and stuff, but my question is:

does it matter if the koi is swimming upwards or downwards?

I have done plenty of research, and I can’t find a definite answer

(and please to those who don’t know what they’re talking about, don’t answer!)
I’d prefer to have a tattoo artist answer this question, or someone who knows alot on Japanese/Chinese history

Thamx allot!
and I don’t want links to some encyclopedias, I already checked those out!
I want to know firsthand from a tattoo artist or someone who knows japanese/chinese history

admin answers:

It would seem that if your koi is swimming up it would symbolize strength, perseverance, and triumph. It doesn’t seem that too many people have their koi swimming down as the koi are known for climbing waterfalls. I don’t know that swimming down would take the meaning away, but another article i read about keeping koi in your garden pool said that they swim deeper to hide from predators. You don’t want to send the message that you’re a coward.

My knowledge is purely based on biology and the breeding history of the fish. I don’t claim to know anything about asian history or tattooing.

Thomas asks…

So how do I become a tattoo apprentice in U.K. ?

How do these things go step by step?

Do i have to pay the teachers, or l become like a assistant and they pay me something ( l heard that at starting point l would have to clean after them, prepare the surface… ( so to say the dirty work ) )

What time it takes to become an tattooist and so on

Thank you.

Luck, timing, perseverance, brown nosing and more luck a bit of artistic talent wouldn’t go a miss either.
It’s a very lucrative business to get into and especially at the moment the market is saturated with tattooist’s everywhere and everyone else tattooing out of their basement. Put yourself together a portfolio of a few drawings that show your style and talent for drawing and then go round all your local tattoo studio’s and ask if they need/want an apprentice. It’s very true alot of the time being taken on as an apprentice means cleaning, answering phones and making tea but most importantly it gets you into the studio environment and if your eager to learn you can prove yourself from there.

It’s very unlikely you will get paid many tattooist’s see what they are teaching you as valuable in it’s own right and so you should be “paying them” in the sense of helping out and cleaning ect for them. Just bear in mind if you get taken on as an apprentice and you arn’t being paid once you are trained you will potentially be able to earn a £100 odd an hour for your talent so it’s worth the hell at the beginning.
It’s as simple as keep trying and if you want it badly enough eventually there will be a lucky break. It’s so much more about luck than anything else but if you keep trying you will get there eventually.
