Your Questions About Insanity And Zumba

Mandy asks…

Which workout is the best for a 15 year old girl?

I’m a 15 year old girl and I really want to get in shape and more toned up. I know of all these types of workouts such as Hip Hop Abs, Zumba, Insanity and such. I don’t need to get insane abs or anything, I just want to lose some weight on my tummy and legs and tone up. Anyone know which workouts are actually effective? There’s so many and some of them probably don’t work so I’m wondering if anyone has some personal experience or which one you think is the best. Thank you! [:

admin answers:

The best workout is the….the one you’ll do. Everything works or doesn’t work. Depends on the person.
The same is true for diets.

You’re eating too many calories. You should stop all the nonsense (supplements, workouts, etc) and get your eating habits in order. I’m sure you’ve heard it a zillion times but that’s the only way to lose fat and keep it gone. That said, you do have an advantage which was not available to you a decade ago (at least for free) and that’s free online tracking. For more about this, read my answer about why exercise is not the key to fat loss —> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlTDB0OPAGPzNFiPDNJ4QZXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20111013033752AA48FJG

Remember, if you want to lose fat, you must control your caloric intake because you can always eat more calories than you can burn.

You should select your gym activities or exercises based on goals which they can be expected to achieve. For example, resistance exercises for strength, aerobic exercises for endurance, cross training for toning, etc.

If you have no goals except fat loss, all you need to do is burn calories and you don’t need a gym or special exercises for that. Just do something you enjoy that requires moving a lot of weight for a long time such as walking, biking, swimming, dancing, sports, etc.

Now check out these fat facts.

• If you consume fewer calories than you burn, you have to lose fat eventually. There are no exceptions to this fact.

• A pound of fat will yield about 3500 calories (Kcal) of energy.

• Your body will burn hundreds of calories even if you are in a coma. That’s your BMR. Go here to find out what it is –> http://www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html

• An average person must run or walk about 5 miles (8 km) every day to burn one pound of fat per week AND THEIR DIET MUST ALLOW IT.

• An average person must run or walk about 350 miles (563 km) to burn 10 pounds AND THEIR DIET MUST ALLOW IT.

• An average person who consumes 500 calories per day less than they burn will lose about a pound a week with no extra time or physical effort required.

• A average person dieting with a 500 calorie/day deficit will burn 10 pounds of fat in 10 weeks. The same person running 5Km (3 miles) per day with a Zero calorie/day deficit will burn 10 pounds in 16 weeks.

•Running only burns slightly more calories than walking as long as the distance remains the same.

• It does not matter if a person runs or walks a given distance…they will burn about the same number of calories. Although running burns slightly more than walking, the distance is far more significant than the speed over which it is traveled.

• It is not necessary to do “cardio” to burn fat. “Cardio” is aerobic exercise which elevates the heart rate to 80% of max and sustains it for the purpose of cardio-vascular fitness. You can burn fat in your sleep.

• Most of the calories you consume will be spent just keeping your body temperature at 98.6F.

• It doesn’t matter how hard or how long you exercise, you will not lose any fat if you eat too much. You can always eat more calories than you can burn. When it comes to burning fat, diet always trumps exercise.

It’s all about tracking, tracking, and tracking.

Good luck and good health!!

Wow 60 pounds in 6 months, congratulations! It really depends on your current fitness level and your goals. Since you have lost all of that weight I’m going to assume you exercised almost daily so you should have a decent fitness level. For you I would recommend insanity. James asks…

losing weight??? program?

okay so I’ll start by telling you all the things I bought but dont do, I bought the bender ball, shaun t dvd set, and some other dvd I bought from the store. Now I am up, I know really early and they are showing different fitness programs to buy. I first saw insanity by shaun t and now I am watching zumba. So the reason I didn’t stick to all the other ones were because they would make me sick and I just wouldn’t eat and it would feel like I had holes in my stomach. I weigh 175 and I’m not looking to get ripped because if you saw me I look like I weigh 150 but, I just want a workout that I can just have fun and do, so which should I do, insanity or zumba, or you can reccomend something else if you want, and no I cannot go to the gym, I’m only 13 and my parents don’t have that kind of time to take me.

A lot of those products are absolutely worthless and a waste of money.

When it all comes down to it, losing weight is as simple as this.

1. Do daily cardio exercise, cardio exercises raise your heart rate. Types of cardio exercise are running, jogging, swimming, sports. Anything that raises your heart rate into the target zone is good cardio. You need to do atleast 20 minutes of it per day.

2. A healthy nutrition.

3. Determination

For losing weight, that’s it. You don’t need to spend any money on fancy equipment. But a good pair of running shoes is worth investing in.

You don’t need to go to a gym, you could get a jump rope and do that at home. It’s fantastic cardio.

It’s a lot more simple than people seem to think.

Ruth asks…

Was just diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Questions?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes yesterday and my doctor was in such a hurry that I didn’t really get a chance to ask questions. I don’t know anything about diabetes, and I didn’t know I was at risk for diabetes. I’m so confused because I had always thought only obese people got it and people with horrible diets. I eat very healthy (lots of veggies, fruit, protein, healthy carbs etc) and I do not eat fried or sugary foods. I don’t even drink soda. I also do 45 minutes of intense cardio every single day (including a mixture of insanity and zumba), and jog an additional hour every day except Sundays. I’m just so confused as I work so hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle but I ended up with this disease. I am a bit overweight because I was pregnant and I was also put on medication that made me gain weight but I’m not obese and this is the first time in my life I’ve ever been overweight. I am trying to lose it but I am having a hard time.

So my question is how in the world did I end up with this and also could diabetes have been the reason I’ve had such a hard time losing weight? I would appreciate all tips and such! Thank you!
I also wanted to add that I did find out that a few members in my family had diabetes, and my grandfather has diabetes. I am also 23 years old, and I’ve been active most of my life (played volleyball in high school and college, was on the swim team in middle school and high school).
I also wanted to mention that I have normal low blood pressure.

admin answers:

Although a majority of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight at diagnosis, most overweight people will never become diabetic. If being overweight or obese were truly the cause of Type 2 diabetes, then diabetes should be much more common than it is. And if a poor diet were the cause, well, just look at the average western diet. Why doesn’t almost EVERYONE in the West have Type 2 diabetes by that logic? Many doctors and researchers now believe that obesity is more of a symptom than a cause of Type 2 diabetes. People who have insulin resistant Type 2 have a metabolic disorder that leads to weight gain. The weight gain merely exacerbates what’s already there, in essence “expediting” and increasing the odds of developing Type 2.

Don’t blame yourself. Type 2 diabetes is largely genetic and heritable. What’s more, the most common age group among new diagnoses is 65 years and older. Genes and age are the biggest factors in becoming Type 2, not weight and diet. Weight could be a symptom, not a cause, and a poor diet high in carbohydrates may just worsen the situation.

I think what you’re beginning to understand, unfortunately through being diagnosed, is that there are many misconceptions about Type 2 diabetes. I had them before my diagnosis, too.

Diabetes could ABSOLUTELY be why you are having a hard time losing weight. Welcome to my personal hell! When you have insulin resistance, a precursor to and symptom of Type 2 diabetes in many, your pancreas has to produce more insulin to compensate. Insulin is a fat storage hormone, so more of what you’re eating is getting moved into body fat than a person whose pancreas produces a normal amount. The more weight you gain, the more insulin resistant you become, so this vicious cycle occurs.

Although I am sure you do eat healthy carbohydrates, there’s really no difference in terms of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Healthy carbohydrates for the general population, like whole grains, brown rice, low-fat yogurt, and so on all have the potential to spike blood sugar just as high as unhealthy carbohydrates, like white bread and potatoes. Anything that spikes your blood sugar also forces your pancreas to produce a lot more insulin to bring blood sugar down, and that means weight gain. On top of that, high blood sugar and high insulin levels can progress the disease and high blood sugar can lead to diabetic complications. So, for all the above reasons, it’s a good idea to adopt a low-carbohydrate diet, not a healthy-carbohydrate diet, to reduce blood sugar and therefore insulin. Exercise improves insulin sensitivity, thereby reducing insulin levels, so keep up the exercise!

I’m in my 20s, too, and unlike you I’ve battled my weight most of my life. Even with my extreme IR and my terrible metabolism, I’ve lost over 100 pounds by low carbing, so I can attest to its success. I wish you all the best and feel free to PM me if you need any help or just want to talk.

*Edit: Even though you can get Type 2 at almost any age and weight, you should still ask your doctor to check your for Type 1. Sometimes a Type 1’s pancreas doesn’t stop producing insulin right away and blood sugar can be lower in what’s considered a pre-diabetic or Type 2 diabetic range (known as “honeymooning”). If you’re a little overweight, a doctor may just assume Type 2, as well. It’s important to get tested because, if your pancreas does stop producing insulin, the situation can get very dangerous, very fast. Push your doctor to test you for Type 1 diabetic antibodies ASAP.
