Your Questions About Ancient Symbols Of Family

Michael asks…

Does the ancient finnish culture have any symbols?

I am starting a clay piece in my IB(International Baccalaureate, Honours) art class. I would like to involve something of finnish culture in the piece but I am having a hard time finding any symbols from finnish culture. The use of finnish culture is because on my mother’s side my family almost completely originates in finland.
I am looking for symbols or common shapes (ex swirls or something), it needs to be something that I can intergrate into my piece.
If I could have a site to show an example or two that would be great! I need to reference all the sources I use as it is a part of the IB curriculum.
Also, I found some finnish made jewelery, Kalevala, are the patterns on the finnish pieces authentic?

Mazes (yes, the swirly kind). And sort of a swastika, except reversed. (No, it has nothing to do with Nazis; it’s actually a fairly common peace symbol around the world.)

William asks…

what is this secret in my ancient crucifix?

My grandfather’s family were antique dealers and collectors for generations and I have inherited many fine pieces from his collection. One of which is a elaborately carved and inlaid crucifix about 1 meter (3 feet) long that my grandfather believed was at least 400 years old. last year when cleaning it I discovered one inlay at the rear was actually a button that released a hidden panel just below Christ’s feet. Inside was a sealed glass vial containing a dark liquid. The vial looks very old as the glass is opalescent like ancient Roman glass. There is a symbol on the vial in gold leaf which looks like a large upturned V over a smaller o. Inlaid inside the container under the vial is an inlaid symbol that looks like a sun with rays with an eye in the center.
The crucifix is obviously catholic so I have asked several catholic historians as to what is in the vial and what the symbols mean but so far have drawn a blank, any ideas?

Sandra asks…

Does anyone else see the Supreme court decision as the end of the US?

While “lobbying” was illegal in ancient Greek the country thrived and became the symbol of wisdom and prosperity in the ancient world. Any “lobbying” was met with the person/company forfeiting all assets and also all assets of the family/lies involved. Once this ended the Greek society ended.

Rome was the other ancient civilization where the exact same thing happened; the punishment for “lobbying”/bribing was the same and once it ended Roman went under.

Do you also now see the US going the same way as these two ancient empires?
Wolfe; you may be right, religious conservatism was what destroyed the Egyptian Empire and we have booth going for us.

admin answers:

Ofcourse the decision was a kick in the teeth to the middleclass. There will be even more jobs sent over seas, now. I maintain, the government needs to stop the outsourcing of jobs and raise tariffs so high that they will have to bring jobs back to the USA. Fk the big biz dks. The middleclass has suffered enough.

Linda asks…

translating hebrew?

A team of archaeologists were excavating in Israel when they came upon a cave. Written across the wall of the cave were the following symbols, in this order of appearance: A woman, a donkey, a shovel, a fish, and a Star of David. They decided that this was a unique find and the writings were atleast three thousand years old. They chopped out the piece of stone and had it brought to the museum where archaeologists from all over the world came to study the ancient symbols. They held a huge meeting after months of conferences to discuss the meaning of the markings.

The President of the society stood up and pointed at the first drawing and said: “This looks like a woman. We can judge that this race was family oriented and held women in high esteem. You can also tell they were intelligent, as the next symbol resembles a donkey, so, they were smart enough to have animals help them till the soil.”

“The next drawing looks like a shovel of some sort, which means they even had tool
to help them.”

“Even further proof of their high intelligence is the fish which means that if a famine had hit the earth, whereby the food didn’t grow, they would take to the sea for food.”

“The last symbol appears to be the Star of David which means they were evidently Hebrews.”

The audience applauded enthusiastically.

Suddenly a little old Jewish man stood up in the back of the room and said, “Idiots! Hebrew is read from right to left. It says: “Holy Mackerel, Dig The Ass On That Woman!”

John asks…

What do you think of my Protagonist’s step-family?

Victoria Bodychen-my protagonist’s stepmom, as a young girl she grew up in a wealthy but dysfunctional family and joined a fundamentalist church to escape the harsh reality. Her first marriage was less passionate, the second was loveless and the current marriage is rough. She has become regretful, bitter, unsympathetic and cruel to those that are lower than her. She hated the protagonist so much because she was a symbol of her shame and her second husband’s infidelity (her husband fell in love with another woman who was beautiful and wonderful). She may be satisfied in her current lifestyle, but she is really afraid of the outside world because of her past, and secretly envious because of her upper-class upbringing.

Godfrey Cutler-Victoria’s third Husband and stepfather to the protagonist, growing up in the fundie church he absorbed all the teachings and beliefs. He works as a butcher and part-time street preacher. He appears as a warm, kind grandfather figure but he can be very authoritarian, rigid, misogynistic and loud. Godfrey suffers from a Paranoid personality disorder.

Grace-Wisdom Bodychen-Victoria’s eldest daughter, a graceful stunning beauty with blond hair and gray eyes. She cooks with pleasure and feigns modesty a lot to show off. But Grace-Wisdom is completely vain, sanctimonious, and a smoker. She kisses up to her stepfather a lot in order to keep him happy and satisfied. Yet she secretly wishes he would drop dead. Grace also loves to play the victim, she enjoys all the attention and is an attention-whore.

Promise Bodychen-Victoria’s youngest daughter and Grace’s sister. A pretty brunette with pigtails and pearly teeth. She sews and washes with delight and prides in her virginity. Yet she is truly voyeuristic, impatient to pop her cherry, self-righteous and swears a lot. Promise suffers from epileptic seizures, which make believe she’s experiencing ‘holiness’.

Isaac Cutler-Godfrey’s oldest son, a bookworm and biblical scholar. Isaac seems to believe in old theories of women’s brain being smaller than the male’s. He’s passionately determined to abstain until marriage, but secretly looks at ancient Greek/Roman statues to his pleasure. He is serious, cold, humorless and a braggart. Also, Isaac is secretly a cross-dresser, he enjoys wearing feminine clothing and likes to think of himself as androgynous.

Noah Cutler-Godfrey’s youngest son, an athlete and a handyman. Noah is handsome and attractive and lost his virginity early in secret. He believes in his Father’s religion but believes he will be forgiven whenever he confesses. Noah is promiscuous, self-important, inflexible and retaliates when rejected by women he lusts for. Noah can also be poor loser and could never play fair.

They all seem to be incredibly dysfunctional on a very extreme level. It makes the appear more like caricatures than characters. It is like Tammy Faye Baker in all her holy glory. I know there are people out there that are extremists in their religious and spiritual beliefs but all six of these people are hypocrites. Not a one is genuine in any sense of the word and none of them follow a pattern. I would think at least one of the daughters thinks like the mother in that the mother’s words are what has been constantly drilled into them. Even her behaviors should show through them. Promiscuity makes sense in that the mother has been married three times, maybe the daughter feels like she needs to test out a few models so she doesn’t get ‘fooled’ by men like her mother did.

They just seem rather extreme, however when written in the context of a story perhaps it will not appear quite so ‘in your face’ and therefore more realistic. Again I believe there are people exactly like this but seeing it written this way seems too over the top.
