Your Questions About Family Symbols Meanings Tattoos

William asks…

If you could get any tattoo what would you get?

So, it seems everyone wants to get a tattoo lately.
My friend is going to get this one:
http://xdf.xanga.com/8cff136027c31236040034/b186465835.jpg

it’s pretty cool but her mom will kill her if she finds out haha 😛

So my question is what tattoos do you have and what do they mean or stand for? And if you don’t have any (or even if you do) what would be your fantasy or ideal tattoo? and why would you get it?
if you guys mention that you want to put a particular poem or quote in your tattoo then could you please write it down
I always love reading quotes and poems…especially if they have meaning to someone
and who knows maybe one of you will introduce me to a wonderful new poet (:

The fingers say LOVE RHCP. RHCP is Red Hot Chili Peppers. My favorite band. I know that people’s taste in music changes, but they have always been my favorite. They always make me smile. I got that tattoo last year when my dad left my mom and basically abandoned the family. So that I am always reminded of something that makes me smile. (^_^)

The bow tie is my silliest tattoo. I went through a stage in my life where I wore bow ties and neck ties on a regular basis. Basically every day. This went on for a few years and I still do on occasion. The other reason for the bow tie is that it is the Chippendale’s logo. After I went to see them, I started drawing that bow tie on myself and putting on a silly party boy routine every chance I got claiming to be a Chippendale’s dancer. It’s a really fun little tattoo.

The heart is the immaculate heart of Mary. I am not Catholic, but part of my family is. And my name is Mary. (^_^) It is a cover up of a terrible old poker job. It took me several years to decide on the design. It went from a lame feather on fire (like from a phoenix) to a phoenix with lame flaming heart, to the final design. I did a matching design for my (then future) husband.

My new one on my shoulder represents my life from the past year. The goblin is a Brian Froud drawing of a goblin who cuts off the hair of kid’s dolls at night. He is called the “mohawk goblin” and I have a mohawk so I thought it was fitting. The bear is my teddy bear. I got him here.

I got him last year as a gift for a friend, but due to circumstances I ended up keeping him and now he is my favorite. (^_^) The mushrooms and gnome are because I love mushrooms and gnomes. Haha. The frog and snail are for a couple of my pets that I lost this year. And the CANTSPEAK is a song that I feel like describes this time in my life.

They all have deeper, more personal meanings than what I have explained but you get the general idea.

I want many more. Eventually I plan on having full sleeves including matching puzzle pieces with all my siblings, another RHCP inspired one, petunia from The Adventures of Pete & Pete, an illustration of Ralph S. Mouse, a depiction of the Crimson Ghost, a ring of elephants, and many many others. I also have plans for a head piece of a crown of thorns & roses with some other symbols thrown in, initials inside of my ears, and the finishing of my chest piece.

I think my most special and personal tattoo will be my head piece. I am getting it for myself and letting my hair grow back out and cover it so that no one will even know it is there without being told. That is my fantasy tattoo. And I can’t wait until I get it done. (^_^)

Maria asks…

I have symbolic Tattoos what are yours?

I’ve gotten two when I was younger.. a rose with a sword and a tribal spider. this time around I got one, well they could count as two. On my wrists.

This time around, I got them as symbolic meaning for my current heart ache

I am Japanese and there is really no symbolic word that means both Hello and Goodbye at the same time. So I used a word that was in Italian.

Why Italian? Ah.. it is because my ex girlfriend loves and would want to see Italy someday. That is the symbolic reason 1# I still love her.

The word is Ciao. ah.. why Ciao

It means Hi and it means Bye

So one Wrist says Ciao and the other says Babe. Both having a small tribal spiked design at the bottom that the tattoo artist came up with himself.

Ciao Babe, Hi babe Bye babe.

This is because my ex is always coming in out of my life.. as my girlfriend sometimes and my ex others..

Ciao babe..

The next tattoo I plan on getting is a koi or a goldfish on my forearm I want to dedicate it to my grandmother Junko

My first tattoo was a design choosen by my best friend at uni, this is very symbolic as it shows we will be friends forever. We still are extremely close nearly ten years on!

My second was a yellow rose symbolising friendship (depends on which book of flower meanings you read) which I got with a group of my friends we all have it in a slightly different place.

My third is my own stylised butterfly design which I drew to symbolise my freedom after splitting up with an abusive ex at the same time as leavinga dead end job. It was almost like I was the catapiller emerging from my coccoon.

My fourth is a row of stars, one for each of the men in my family.

My fifth is a heart on my wrist to remind me no matter how bad life gets there will always be someone out there in the world that loves me, this fact makes life worth living no matter how bad it feels.

My sixth is a word that is symbolic to my and my closest friend only.

My seventh is a fire symbol which symbolise my passion for life and my drive to succeed!

My eighth is my star sign, which obviously symbolises me. LOL a little vain perhaps.

My ninth is a cherry blosson design, made to resemble both the strong women in my family (Chinese meaning) and the transitional nature of life (the Japanese Buddhist meaning) both are important to me.

My tenth and eleventh will both be meaningful phrases, two phrases that I live by!

So every tattoo I have symbolises someone or something extremely important to me.
I’m so glad that you have put so much time and effort into thinking about the meaning of your tattoos, that way you should never regret having them done.

Chris asks…

Koi tattoo symbolism?

Ok so I have found what I want to get, and most probably the location too –

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32664580@N08/3080251879/

But my parents dont really like tattoos unless they have good symbolism and mean something. So I need to come up with a few really good meanings for getting it.

I have 2 already so please no nasty comments about thinking it thru or what not.

I thought the koi symbolised good luck? Does it mean anything else?

And I also heard that the direction it swims in means something too?

Thanks so much!! =]

KOI TATTOO – Probably surprising to many westerners is the large of amount of ancient myth that surrounds these beautiful fish in the Orient and their elevated status there. Generally known here as the brightly colored fish that are common in public ponds and fountains, carp (koi is Japanese for carp) can be found in colors that include white, yellow, gold, a deep orange, and some are even calico-colored. Particularly beautiful specimens have been known to fetch prices in excess of half-a-million dollars from private collectors who specialize in their breeding and showing. However, the koi is more than just a colorful and collectible fish. It is also one of the most popular and beautiful of Japanese tattoo symbols – a beauty which belies its symbolic meaning. Although Chinese in origin, the carp is now widely celebrated in Japan, particularly for its manly qualities. It is said to climb waterfalls bravely, and, if caught, it lies upon the cutting board awaiting the knife without a quiver, not unlike a samurai (warrior) facing a sword. This theme dates back to ancient China, where a legend tells of how any koi that succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate (on the Yellow River) would be transformed into a dragon. Based on that legend, it became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement. Eventually, the stoic fish came to be associated with so many masculine and positive qualities that it was appropriated for the annual Boys’ Day Festival in Japan where even today colorful, streaming koi flags are traditionally displayed for each son in the family. In tattoo imagery, especially in combination with flowing water, it symbolizes much the same: courage, the ability to attain high goals, and overcoming life’s difficulties.

Sandy asks…

Hey everyone, if you have a tattoo what does it mean to you?

Everyone gets a tattoo for different reasons and they hold different meanings so what does your mean to you? I myself have an eighth note on my wrist and for me it holds a lot of meaning to me. Music is like everything to me. I found my way through high school once I got involved in music. I found my place. Where I belonged. I also met my wonderful husband in choir. I like everyone else have my days when I feel like everything is going wrong but when I sing I feel like it centers me and helps me feel calm and whole. Now every time I look at my tattoo it lets me feel that no matter what else happens I can always return to what makes me feel happy and that is music. What does yours mean to you?

I have one on my wrist which i got after going through a hard time in my life. It’s a dagaz rune symbol which means dawn and new beginnings. It reminds me that no matter how hard a day can be that tomorrows always a new start.

I have an entwining ivy vine from my shoulder to my hip which is a memorial piece for my grandparents.
Ivy symbolises love and immortality, and was also my gran’s name.

My third is a large rib piece. I have 5 butterflies which represent my family, and 2 hibiscus flowers which represent myself and my partner.

Jenny asks…

I need tattoo ideas!!!!?

Im thinking about getting my first tattoo. But i dont know what i want! I NEED HELP! I want it to be something special, that people will also like. I wanted to get my bf initials with musical notes around it since he loves music, but ill wait for that one until we’re married or engaged. Next yr a bunch of ppl I graduated basic training with, we’re all getting our military tatts..so no military.

I want something maybe cultural, Im african american, have west indian, english and irish siblings. Something to do with family, and love, and relationships. My family is huge into adoption, as i was adopted and 4 of my siblings…My name means victorious and overcomer.

So yeah thats alot of info…but maybe somthing symbolizing multicultural family and my love relationship with my bf?

admin answers:

I would suggest not getting your bf’s initials, at least not yet. You never know if something could happen, then you’re stuck with his initials forever.

Look on google, photobucket, etc. For some ideas.

My first tattoo meant “infinite love” it was the infinity symbol with love in the middle.

Try to think of something unique but that can have a lot of meanings, like mine can mean love for my family, friends, boyfriend, etc.
