Nancy asks…

What’s the symbolism behind a Koi and Lotus tattoo?

I’m thinking of getting one to cover up another tattoo. I’ve had some varied responses as to the meaning behind a koi tattoo and a lotus tattoo. I’m pretty sure of the picture of the one I want but any links to pictures of more would be appreciated also.
Thanks!

Hey guy up there! Thanks for stalking me!! (just kidding)

in asian culture the koi swims upstream and up a waterfall (much like trout do to spawn) and once they reach the top of the waterfall they turn into a dragon (a symbol of the struggle of life and when you reach the end you get to heaven.) for that reason my artist will only tattoo kois swimming up and NEVER down as that is a symbol of NOT persevering thru life and i guess not getting into heaven. So keep that in mind.
Lotus flowers grow in the water. They start under water and grow upward towards the light. So it is kindof like persevering and ending up with beauty. Some consider them to be lucky as well.
My koi is a coverup tattoo as well. I picked a specific sketch of a koi that i found on the internet and some different pictures of lotus flowers and brought them to my artist and he created my tattoo for me based on what i did and did not like about various aspects of other tattoos i had seen. On ratemyink.com there is a whole category dedicated to koi tattoos. Here is a link, mine is in there somewhere. It’s actually #4 on the koi top 10 list.

I have 11 tats. I didn’t get them for anyone else’s amusement or enjoyment. I got them for me and to remember where I was in my life, to help me get past situations and know never to return to them, as memories of life in general. I have one on my chest that will be covered up someday, but for the past 11 years reminded me to stay strong and not to let men take advantage of me or physically hurt me. Another is the chinese symbol for Love Hurts, which has significance in 2 different ways: my brother died earlier that day at age 38 and second, the love of my life and I had just split up after almost 4 years of living together. I have 2 tattoos which represent both of my children’s personalities when they were young.

My most recent and most cherished is a celtic tattoo on my upper arm which has my husbands’ name and our wedding date. Yes, I married the love of my life I mentioned earlier with the Love Hurts tat. Life could not be better!!! I am looking at getting another soon. I love the script writing of other languages, so I am going to have “Dream as if you will live forever, Live as if you will die today” in either italian or spanish. Words to live by.

Some have color, some are just different shades of gray, some are all black. I have 2 ankle tats, 2 thigh tats, stomach, butt, upper back sholder, above my heart, back of my neck, on my left upper arm and on my right hand. I know I didn’t give details on all of them, but some things will just remain personal.

Thanks for the question!

Sandy asks…

What is the meaning behind swallows? Could they be a good sister tattoo?

What do two swallows mean? My sister and I really like how they look, but we also want something that will have a meaning behind it.

admin answers:

1) Just remember that it is, erm, a swallow. And there really isn’t a delicate way of saying this, but if you tell someone that you and your sister have matching swallow tattoos… It may be perceived in a sexual manner. Maybe that’s just me, but it’s something to think about.

2) Swallows are a very traditional tattoo. It was (allegedly) used as a status symbol among sailors. A sailor who sailed so many miles would get a swallow. After another amount of miles, they would get another. Etc etc. There are several different origin stories of this concept, but that’s the most common meaning I could find. They also represent love, respect, and loyalty to the home. They make a very beautiful tattoo, especially if done in a traditional style. I would not recommend, however, getting it done in the hip bone area. See point one.

3) A lot of species of birds fight with their nest mates/siblings. As they must be very competitive to survive, siblings can get very violent with each other.

Chris asks…

What kind of flower represents my love for my mom in a tattoo?

I’m getting a tattoo within the next year, and it’s going to be a representation of my love for my mom. She’s gone through so much in her life and i realy want to show her how much i appreciate her. I’m getting a vine to incorporate my dads, sisters, and grandmother’s symbols as well. But i don’t know what to do for my mom’s. any suggestions would be great. i want it to have meaning behind it, & to be an elegant flower 🙂 i love my mom so much! thank you 🙂

admin answers:

What is your moms favourite flower? Do you share a favourite flower? I recently got a sunflower tattoo for my mother, it is both my favourite flower and hers. Sunflowers have a meaning of adoration.
