Susan asks…

Good diet for a 16 year old in school?

Im a 5″8 16 year old. I weigh 260+ and I want to lose weight. Fast, preferably. But I can’t stick to diets such as the 17 day diet because I have school and I cant have the 6 small meals a day some diets call for. The only time I can eat in between 7am and 3pm is during lunch.

Please help. Thanks.

admin answers:

Egg whites and an egg for breakfast, you can have milk or water your choice! Break you can have a banana, carrots, apple, grapes! Lunch pack in a little tub aware a nice salad and have water throughout the day! For dinner have like chicken or something with protein. This is exactly what I do, I’m also 16. I have 3 brothers that are body builders so I’m really into fitness but please don’t calorie count because it puts stress on you and don’t think to literal like 100 calorie snicker bar vs 200 cals of fruit, snicker bar doesn’t make it any better the fruit has all the nutrition! Goodluck girl!!

Professional Fitness Trainers answers please?

my brother just turned 12 and is looking to do football in the summertime. Yesterday, him and my dad went out and bought Muscle Milk for him to start drinking. My brother does not lift weights very often and only has a work out system of doing pushups, situps, pull-ups on his pull-up bar, etc. just exercises that you can do around the house without any equipment. He only lifts weights or uses any equipment if we go somewhere that has a gym, which is RARE. My question is if protein powder is even safe for a 12 year old?

admin answers:

Not safe.

For one thing, in the US it’s legal to have inaccurate labels, so the “25 gr protein per scoop” on the label could actually be 10 grams or anything.

Then there’s the question of all the other ingredients.

Then, does you dad know how many grams of protein your bro needs daily? How much is too much?

He shouldnt be involved in this if he’s uninformed.

But the situps and pullups can be challenging…just bc there are no weights involved doesnt mean they’r not.

But it doesnt follow you bro needs supplement bc of that challenge.

Use well cooked egg whites & skim milk power for protein.

A good multi vitamin/mineral is Rite Aid drugstore chain’s Central-Vite. It’s USP certified [United States Pharmacopeia] for Potencies, Disintegration/dissolution & Weight. Look for the letters USP on the label of all vits, mins & some supplements like fish oil, it may be in small print, and see which categories are certified: potency, disintegration & weight, hopefully, all three will be. How can I grow taller?

I’m in a horrible Dillemma. I hate being short its fucking my life over, All my friends are 5’8 + and I’m like 5’4 My best friend is 5’10 Its just so discouraging. I really need to get taller I’m 15 years old (turning 15 this august) and I’m 5’4. My dad is 5’4 and my mom is 5’2. My 11 year old brother is 4’11. I dont have a relative tallness in my genes all my uncles are short (tallest one being 5’8/5’9). I recently started worrying about my height since I noticed many people were taller than me. I’m not really overweight or anything I weight 117 actually kinda underweight but I’m not anorexic. My dad told me he stopped growing at like 17 years of age. I want to grow taller quickly, I’m willing to do anything! Other than taking drugs/supplements. All naturally please. I recently got an iron Gym pull up bar and I do pulls ups on that today I started hanging on it and I will keep doing it every day. This whole month I have been a bit under nutrition because I have been fasting and I lost about 3 pounds (I was 120 before). But it ends in about two days and I’m willing to eat alot and anything to grow taller naturally. Its really discouraging and I dont feel confident, Please help me guys. I’m a male btw Idk why I said it last lmfao.

Is this a good idea for weightloss?

Special K Bar for breakfast

Plain Ham sandwich on one day. Plain chicken slices sandwich on another. And then just some salad on another day?

And a Weight watchers dinner?

How much would you lose by doing that? And doing 10 or 15mins on a Bike machine?

How much would you lose weekly do you think?

admin answers:

No, it’s not nearly varied enough. It’s not really a good idea to eat the same thing every day because different foods provide different vitamins and minerals.

It’s hard to know how much he will lose because you didn’t tell us height, weight, and age. If he wants to know how much he will lose, have him calculate his BMR and calories burned (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc), add those together, and subtract his calories consumed from it. A pound is 3500 calories, so however many calories he burned divided by 3500 is how much he will lose.

Generally speaking, 15 minutes of exercise isn’t going to do a lot. With cardio, you should always get 30-60 minutes, 3-6 days a week.

You need to eat at least 1200 calories a day in order to be keeping metabolism up and be getting enough nutrition, and at least 40 g of protein a day. Drink at least 2-4 L of water a day.

admin answers:

You need to eat all the four food groups, but since you don’t eat meat you’re going to need to have a substitute for that, I know that vegetarianism and veganism are becoming increasingly popular. Yet many critics claim a diet without meat is less nutritionally-sound than one that includes it, primarily due to a dearth of protein.

Protein is essential to existence. Hair, skin and muscle are primarily derived from protein. In fact, a protein deficiency can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, hair loss and a variety of other maladies. (To find your optimal daily dose of protein, nutritionists suggest multiplying your body weight in pounds by .4.)

So how do you get protein without the meat?

Nuts
The easiest (and possibly tastiest) answer is nuts. All varieties of nuts: almonds, peanuts, cashews, pecans, hazelnuts – you name it. And for those of you who like it smooth, peanut butter is an excellent source of protein with 4 grams per tablespoon. Watch the salt though: the USDA recommends choosing unsalted nuts to keep the sodium intake low.

Seeds
Remember those amazing roasted pumpkin seeds from childhood Halloween parties? Who knew they were good for you? Well, turns out they are. Along with their squash, sunflower, sesame and watermelon seed brethren. More popular in the Middle East than the U.S., many of these seeds provide upwards of 33 grams of protein per 100 gram serving.

Dairy
If you’re a vegan, you can skip this section… but if you’re not, oh boy: CHEESE. Cottage cheese, cheddar, Swiss, Munster, Colby. Low sodium parmesan ranks the protein heavyweight according to Healthaliciousness with 42 grams per 100 gram serving. Other dairy products like eggs, milk and ice cream also provide a substantial amount of protein, with the added benefit of high calcium content.

Beans
More than being the subject of an annoying childhood taunt, beans are pretty amazing. One of their remarkable qualities is a wealth of protein, especially strong in black and garbanzo beans. Vegans and vegetarians can also look to bean burgers for a less conventional twist.

Soy
Soy: nutrition’s favorite utility player. Between tofu, soy milk, veggie burgers and tempeh, is there anything it can’t do? Tofu packs a hefty 20 grams of protein per half cup, whereas soy beans boast 14 grams for the same amount.

Supplements & Bars
A smoothie or energy bar is perfect for protein replenishment on-the-go. Watch the sugar and fat, however, or your health “benefit” may turn into a net negative.

Cereal
Cereals like Kashi Go Lean can also be good sources of protein. For some of the most popular, check out LiveStrong’s Protein Cereals List.

Spinach
And last but not least, the greens our parents begged us to eat: spinach. In addition to being delicious (well, now that I’m a grown-up), spinach provides protein as well as fiber and Vitamin A. Toss in some cheese and double up on the nutrition!
